people’s actions and culture accumulate, shaping—or even imposing—the structure of life. Since the opening of Joseon’s ports, most modern housing styles foreign to Korea’s traditional architecture were introduced through Japan. This process&nbsp; served as both a conduit for modernity and a site of cultural collision and integration. In particular, Japanese-style houses built by the Japanese during the colonial period became U.S. military government property after Japan’s defeat in World War II. Known as enemy property houses (Jeoksan-gaok), they were later sold to Koreans by the U.S. military government and the Rhee Syngman administration. Over the past 70 years, these houses have undergone various transformations, shaped by historical necessities and individual needs. Although Jeoksan-gaok is often discussed in ideological and political terms, these houses—originally built with a Japanese framework—have been filled with the lives and cultural imprints of Koreans. This suggests that, rather than prioritizing ideology, history, or national identity in their homes, Koreans have placed the highest value on practicality. It also reveals that a house is not merely a symbol of history, but a form of life shaped by historical forces. ︎ 적산 (敵産) 집은 사람들의 행위와 문화가 쌓이는 공간이자 삶의 형태를 만드는 또는 강제하는 틀(구조)이다. 조선의 개항 이후, 과거 우리의 주거 양식과 다른 외래 근대주택 양식은 대부분 일본을 통해 들어왔다. 이는 근대가 우리에게 유입된 통로이자 축이 다른 문화가 상호 충돌, 융합하는 공간이라 말할 수 있다. 특히, 일제강점기 일본인에 의해 지어진 일식 가옥은 일본의 패전 이후 미군정 소유가 된다. 적의 재산, 즉 적산가옥(敵産家屋)이라 불리는 이 주택은 미군정, 이승만 정권에 의해 한국인에게 불하되었고, 이후 70여 년 동안 시대적 필요와 개인의 욕망에 따라 다양한 형태로 변화해 왔다. 적산가옥은 이념과 정치 언어로 호명되지만, 식민지 시기 일본인이 만든 뼈대에, 그 속은 한국인들의 행위와 문화의 결이 채워진 것이라 말할 수 있다. 이는 한국인이 집을 이념, 역사, 국가를 넘어 ‘실용’을 가장 최우선의 가치를 두고 살아왔다는 것을 말해줄 뿐만 아니라, 집이 successful hunting, gathering, and farming can be considered a universal human practice. Roof ridge figurines (Eocheoguni, decorative anthropomorphic figures placed atop palace roof ridges) on the palace roofs of the Joseon Dynasty, guardian mask tiles (Gwimyeonmangwa, roof tiles bearing demon-face motifs to ward off evil spirits) on traditional Korean houses (Hanok), door guardian paintings (Munbaedo, paintings of divine gate guardians posted on main gates to repel malevolent forces) and paintings of the ten symbols of longevity (Sipjangsaengdo) hung inside homes can all be viewed as acts of seeking prosperity, aimed at warding off misfortune and wishing for the health and longevity of the family. This tradition has expanded and transitioned to the interiors and exteriors of modernized houses (such as Western-style houses, villas (low-rise multi-unit residential buildings), and commercial-residential buildings) that succeeded traditional hanoks. In particular, motifs like the ten symbols of longevity (Sipjangsaeng) and the twelve guardian deities of the zodiac (Sibijisin) are commonly found on front gates, entrance doors, walls, and parking shutters, often created using metal casting or mortar techniques. Interestingly, these patterns sometimes draw directly from Buddhism and Taoism, while also incorporating and combining motifs found in Art Nouveau, mosques, Greek temples, and the traditional cultures of Korea, Japan, and China. This can be seen as a boundary-less culture of prosperity-seeking, where individuals and families blend numerous sacred elements across religions, nations, and eras to pray for their own benefit. It began at two districts both named Dowon-dong in Daegu and Incheon which harbors ‘Jagal-madang’ and ‘Yellow House’ (the red-light districts established by imperial Japan). Shrines and their sites that follow architectural style of Japanese imperial era were turned into school and park. Also, there are many extended and transformed enemy property houses (jeoksan-gaok) of colonial Japanese era representing modern history of Korea. The two cities offer many parallels to observe and compare The purpose of Axis project was to show rugged traces of modern and contemporary history of Korea starting from modernization through Japanese colonial period, the Korean War, military dictatorship period, industrialization period, to reign of neoliberalism. Capitalism had made a fetish of women’s bodies cruelly and vulgarly and the state inflicted damages and wounds upon us by using the crude feature of capitalism violently. All those wounds left traces and they were accumulated and engraved not only on our bodies but in time and space. Axis takes a form of triptych based on condensational feature of photography. With accumulated layers of structures in the red-light district and pain embedded in the body of sex workers, I try to look squarely at the structure of Korean society. ︎ 축(軸) &nbsp; &lt;축(軸)&gt;은 한국 사회의 시간과 공간이 강하게 압축된 인천과 대구를 중심으로 진행한 프로젝트이다. 자갈마당이 있는 대구 도원동, 나의 고향 인천 도원동 지명이 동일하듯 일제강점기에 지어진 대구와 인천의 신사는 각각 공원과 학교로 변화하였다. 또한 두 도시 모두 한국의 근∙현대사를 고스란히 표상하는 증축, 변형된 적산가옥이 도심 내 가득하며 일제가 조성한 유곽, 권번은 성매매집결지인 자갈마당으로 또 엘로우 하우스로 변화하였다. 근대화, 일제식민지, 한국전쟁, 군부독재, 산업화, 신자유주의로 이어지는 한국 근∙현대사의 험난한 궤적과 여성의 신체를 표백, 물신화한 자본주의 그리고 이를 이용한 국가폭력이 유발한 상처와 흔적은 우리의 신체뿐만 아니라 그것이 머물다 간 각각의 시공간에 축적되고 각인되었다. (Chulsoo &amp; Younghee) Korean textbooks are full of didactic images meant to educate children. Yet, in reality, for some reason our childhoods were filled with strange and traumatic images. And those images somehow appear regularly in our everyday lives and affect us for the rest of our lives. People with strange memories from their childhood and I, a photographer, wore doll&nbsp; head masks of the main characters, Chulsoo and Younghee, who appear in these elementary textbooks and we tried to recreate emotional moments from our past. And these emotional moments were in turn recreated into the textbook that remains in the memories of young Koreans who attended elementary school from the start of the 1970s to the mid-1990s. The story of Chulsoo and Younghee that appeared in our elementary textbooks is about the memories from our youth and these memories have great influence over our lives even now. It is difficult to identify why we continue to be influenced by those memories, what their true nature is, and what their underlying causes are. There are still so many times when we still do not know how to dispel these memories, what the solution is, and what the answer is. As a result, we torture ourselves over them, try to conceal them from others and are tormented by them. What is more, there isn’t an instruction manual we can refer to in order to overcome it, and therefore, we cannot even imagine that the reason and solutions to those incidents are close at hand. The sad reality is that from the memories that they hold within their hearts, many people suffer from humiliation, guilt, trauma, shock, and stress from which they cannot easily escape. A possible solution for this lies within an education (not just education taught at schools but also overall social education and instruction) that is based on deep understanding and consideration for people. Also, going beyond the structural violence and typical way of narrow-minded thinking, there is need for a wide range of alternative philosophy and attention. All the images in this The Text Book (Chulsoo &amp; Younghee) are the collection of fevers that we as Koreans, and as humans, have suffered, are suffering and will suffer in the future. These images are also a personal analysis of the Korean society from the past to the present that was done in order to overcome this collection of ills. Lastly, these images are a counterproposal that passionately calls out to counterattack society. &nbsp; ︎ 교과서(철수와 영희) 대한민국 교과서에는 아이들을 계몽하는 이미지들로 가득하다. 그러나 현실적으로 볼 때 우리의 어린 시절은 어떠한 이유에서인지 기묘하거나 충격적인 이미지들로 채워져 있고 그러한 이미지들은 어떠한 계기를 통해 일상생활 안에서 주기적으로 나타나 우리에게 평생 영향을 미친다. 사진 작가인 나와 어린 시절의 기묘한 기억을 가진 사람들이 교과서 주인공인 철수와 영희의 인형탈을 쓰고 그 감정적인 순간을 함께 재구성하였고 이렇게 만들어진 순간은 1970년대 중반부터 1990년대까지 초등학교 시절을 보낸 대한민국 젊은이의 기억이 담긴 교과서로 재구성되었다. 교과서(철수와 영희)는 현재 우리에게 지대한 영향을 미치는 어린 시절의 기억에 대한 이야기이다. 우리는 왜 그러한 기억에 지속적으로 영향을 받는지 그것의 본질이 무엇이고 원인은 무엇인지 쉽게 찾지 못한다. 우린 이러한 기억을 아직까지도 어떻게 풀어야 하는지, 그러한 행위에 대한 해결책은 무엇인지 답을 가지지 못할 때가 많으며 스스로 자학하고 숨기며 괴로워할 때가 있다. 그리고 그것을 극복할 수 있는 매뉴얼 즉 그러한 사건의 이유와 해결방법이 아주 가까운 주변에 있다는 것을 생각하지 못한다. 많은 사람들이 여전히 가슴속에 자신의 기억으로 인해 인간으로서 가지는 모멸감, 죄의식, 트라우마, 충격, 스트레스를 받고 있으며 그것에서 쉽게 벗어나지 못하고 있는 건 슬픈 현실이다. 이러한 것의 해결책은 인간에 대한 깊은 사고와 이해가 바탕이 된 교육 (학교 교육 만이 아닌 사회 전반적인 학습, 습득)이 있어야 가능하다고 생각한다. 또한 사회 전반에 숨겨져 있는 구조적 폭력과 편협하고 전형적인 사고방식을 넘어서는 다양하고 대안적인 시선과 철학이 필요하다고 생각한다. 이 &lt;교과서(철수와 영희)&gt;의 모든 이미지는 한국인으로써 넓게는 인간으로써 우리가 겪었던, 겪고 있는 또는 겪을 열병의 집합체이며 이것을 극복하기 위한 과거부터 현재까지 대한민국 사회에 대한 개인의 분석이며 또한 대안을 가지고 사회에 반격하는 뜨거운 외침이기도 하다. ︎︎ Production Period : 2006-2008 / Media : Digital c-print /&nbsp; Location : Incheon &amp; Bucheon / Number of Works : 23&nbsp; Title (From the Top) : 1. p277, 100x124cm, 2008 /&nbsp; 2. p172, 60x73cm, 2007&nbsp; / 3. p31, 26x32cm, 2006&nbsp; / 4. This conflict brings to light the sacrifice and resistance of workers concealed beneath the order and discipline of the production line, while simultaneously exposing the gradual erasure of labor's agency within the process of technological automation. Production facilities, optimized for practicality and efficiency, are spaces constructed through mechanical discipline and the logic of capital—remaining as sites that resist easy legibility, severed from the rhythms of everyday life. The act of looking into the "factory" thus transcends mere observation of an industrial facility; it becomes a process of critically interrogating how capitalism has organized the human body, technology, and space. To recover the techno-spatial agency of the laborer, one must begin with a rigorous examination of the labor structures internal to the factory, the passage of time, and the unvisualized modes of discipline and control that operate within it. Within the rapidly restructuring landscape of contemporary capitalism, we are compelled to ask whether we are merely replicating the factories of the past, or whether the relations among labor and capital, humans and machines, are being extended and reorganized in fundamentally different ways. The factory is not a relic of the past but an ongoing, present-tense space in which structural tensions between labor and capital continue to operate—a system through which capital's mechanisms of control and deployment are continuously enacted. On the line balance wall, value-added time is indicated in color while non-value-added time is marked in white; around the contested terrain of line efficiency, tension between labor and capital is perpetually generated. The incessant flow of vehicles moving along the conveyor belt on the assembly line renders visible the process of the conversion of living labor into mechanical, repeatable "dead labor." One worker testified that even within this oppressive temporal structure, he carved out a gap of some 20 to 30 seconds to read a book. These fleeting seconds, secured amidst a time of strictly controlled efficiency and discipline, constitute a hairline fracture in the order imposed by the line balance—a moment in which the laborer temporarily reclaims his own time. Arranged in a triptych format, the work was an attempt to view the intersection of the individual body and social structure as a singular axis through which to read the forces at play in that convergence. Since 2025, the conceptual framework of this work has been extended into the space of the factory. Confronting industrial accidents at the Bupyeong Automotive Plant—specifically the scars inscribed upon the bodies of laborers—I record the physical and structural traces generated within the relations between humans and machines, capital and labor. These injuries have long been obscured: reduced to problems of the individual worker, they have failed to gain broader social legibility. The bodies of laborers, belatedly and reluctantly surfaced, bear wounds that are either the result of long-term, repetitive, and accumulated labor, or the traces of unforeseen accidents—standing in stark contrast to the immaculate, finished surfaces of the vehicles produced. The laborer's body becomes entangled with the factory's machinery, processes, movement patterns, and disciplinary structures to form a singular axis. Axis (軸) does not merely denote a mechanical shaft; it is an attempt to illuminate the invisible axes that have persistently operated within the structures of capital and Korean society, as well as the concealed wounds and memories embedded within them. Through the traces of the body left beneath the products of production, this work re-interrogates how the factory as a space has organized and exhausted the human body. ︎ 축(軸) &lt;축(軸)&gt; 은 2016년, 성매매 여성의 신체에 축적된 상처와 일제강점기 및 한국전쟁 이후 형성된 성매매 집결지의 증축·변형된 건축물을 사진으로 기록하고, 이를 트립틱(제단화) 형식으로 구성한 작업에서 출발했다. 이 작업은 개인의 신체와 사회 구조가 교차하는 지점을 하나의 ‘축’으로 바라보는 시도였다. 2025년 이후 본 작업의 개념을 공장이라는 공간으로 확장했다. 부평자동차공장에서 수출 증진을 위한 주안국가산단이 들어서면서 지어지기 시작했다. 산단의 노동자를 적극 수용하면서 농촌마을인 가좌동의 정체성은 공단 배후의 주택단지로 바뀌었다. 이때 노동자의 프라이버시를 고려하거나 용적률을 높이기 위해 각 층으로 연결하는 가장 효율적인 동선이 무언인지 고민하여 대문 위로 계단을 놓거나 3층으로 가파르게 연결되는 계단을 놓는 등 혁신적인 방법으로 계단을 설치하였다. 실용성을 그 어떤 가치보다 최우선을 둔, 즉 기능이 강조되고 동일한 방법이 지역에서 보편화 되면서 특정적인 주택 다자인이 자리 잡은 사례라 할 수 있을 것이다.&nbsp; 주택 건립 당시 집 내부에 화장실을 만들지 않고 외부 계단 아래에 공용화장실을 만들어 사용한 경우가 많았다. 현재는 집 내부에 화장실을 만들어 개별적으로 노동자들이 하나둘 그 공간을 채워가기 시작했다. 그 외에 가좌동의 주택에는 약 40여년 동안 사용자의 취향과 미감에 따라 내.외부를 수리, 보수, 증축한 흔적 또한 찾아볼 수 있다. 가좌동 가좌동은 가재울과 건지골, 감중절리 그리고 능안말이라는 세 개의 자연취락이 있던 곳이다. 갯골과 바다를 마주하며 농사를 짓던 전형적인 농촌 마을이었으며 윗나루와 아랫나루가 있어 배를 통해 인천 원도심을 왕래하거나 서울, 김포, 강화로 가는 길목에 위치하여 교통의 중심지로 자리해왔다. 1907년 마을 앞 갯벌에 우리나라 최초로 천일염을 생산하는 주안염전이 대한제국에 의해 조성되었고 1910년 이후 조선총독부 전매청, 1963년 대한염업(주)이 관리, 운영하였다. 한국전쟁 이후 마을에 ‘개발단’이라고 불리던 전쟁 피란민들이 일부 지역에 정착하기도 하였으며 1967년 인천과 서울을 오가는 경인고속도로가 착공되고 1968년부터 1974년까지 대한염업(주) 소유였던 주안염전이 소금 생산 기능을 상실하면서 매립되었고 그곳에 기업의 수출 증진을 위한 주안국가산업단지가 들어선다. 1984년경에는 대부분 논과 밭이었던 가좌동 땅을 한국토지개발공사(현 LH)에서 매입하고 함봉산 아래 있던 밭의 토지를 이용해 논(떡 방죽)을 매립하여 평탄화하고 대규모 주택지를 조성하면서 현재의 모습을 갖게 되었다. - 함봉산 아래 학운정 일대에서만 예전 농경사회였던 가좌동의 흔적을 찾아볼 수 있다. 가좌4동의 주택은 주안산업단지 노동자들의 거주 수요를 반영하여 단독주택보다는 다가구주택 형태의 건축물이 주를 이루게 된다. 또한, 다가구가 거주하였기 때문에 각 세대의 동선과 프라이버시를 고려해 건축물에 다양하고 획기적인 발상으로 계단을 설치하는 등의 모습을 볼 수 있다. 이는 기존 주택의 형태를 뛰어넘는, 개성 넘치는 주택군의 형성으로 연결된다. 현재 가좌4동은 시흥 시화공단의 확장으로 많은 공장이 이전함은 물론 공장의 기계화와 자동화로 인해 유입 노동자 수가 줄어들고 노령인구 비율이 높은 마을이 and living cultures of Koreans through the lens of Incheon's space and time, tracing the history inscribed within them. Incheon is a symbolic site where modernity first set foot — a stateless space that once held possibilities yet to be defined. As machines and factories spread throughout the city, people wrote a persistent history of resistance and labor against lives mechanized and bound by capital. It is also an intersection where the tragic sacrifices of the Korean War and the taut ideological tensions between North and South converge. As a result, Incheon stands as a site where tradition, nature, and individual lives have been continually sacrificed for the sake of national and industrial growth. The project Incheon&nbsp;captures, through photography, the layers of time and memory accumulated across the Japanese colonial period, the Korean War, and industrialization — beginning from the nascent landscapes of Incheon's transformation into a modern city following its opening to trade. The subjects include the interiors and exteriors of jeoksangaok (enemy-property houses) that survive across the old city center, altered and expanded with each passing era; peculiar accumulations of time discovered in streets and alleyways; and the inner harbor and industrial facilities of Incheon that have fulfilled their purpose and now stand still. If a city were a single, vast body, these physical strata of time would be the vital organs that once kept it alive. This project summons the "bodily organs" of Incheon — long concealed or on the verge of being discarded — through the grammar of photography, in order to confront and bear witness to the lives and culture imprinted within the identity of Incheon and, by extension, Korea itself. ︎ 인천&nbsp; (仁川) 도시 인천의 시공간을 축으로 한국인의 거주 및 생활문화를 기록하며, 그 이면에 각인된 역사를 추적한다. 인천은 근대성이 첫발을 내디딘 상징적 장소이자, 규정되지 않은 무국적의 가능성을 품었던 곳이다. 도시 곳곳에 기계와 공장이 들어섰고, 사람들은 기계화된 신체와 자본에 구속된 삶에서 벗어나기 위해 끈질긴 노동의 역사를 써 내려왔다. 또한 6.25 전쟁의 비극적 희생과 남북 이념의 팽팽한 긴장이 교차하는 접점이기도 하다. 결과적으로 인천은 국가와 산업의 성장을 위해 전통과 자연, 그리고 개인의 삶이 부단히 희생되어 온 현장이다. 프로젝트 &lt;인천(仁川)&gt;은 개항 이후 근대 도시로 탈바꿈한 인천의 시초적 풍경에서부터 일제강점기, 전쟁, 산업화를 거치며 축적된 시간과 기억의 층위를 사진으로 포착한다. 원도심 곳곳에 잔존하며 시대에 따라 증축·변형된 적산가옥(敵産家屋)의 안팎, 거리와 골목에서 발견되는 기이한 시간의 축적물, 그리고 소임을 다하고 멈춰 선 인천 내항과 산업시설들이 그 대상이다. 만약 도시가 하나의 거대한 신체라면, 이 물리적 시층(時層)들은 도시를 생동하게 했던 핵심 기관과 같다. 본 프로젝트는 오랜 시간 은폐되거나 폐기될 위기에 처한 인천의 '신체 기관'들을 사진적 문법으로 호출한다. 이를 통해 인천, 나아가 한국의 정체성 속에 각인된 우리의 삶과 문화를 직시하고 증명하고자 한다. ︎︎ Sonyon’ege)&nbsp; From the sea to the youth (Hae’egeso Sonyon’ege) is the title of the first modern poem in Korea which was published by Choi Nam-Son at 1908. (Japanese Colonial Period was started at 1910 in Korea, however, in reality, we were under controlled by Japan from 1905) This poem shows us about the model of the youth (Chungsonyon) which was constructed by early modern intellectuals. They defined and preached the youth (Chungsonyon) as the person who overcomes (cuts off) our pre-modern the Joseon Dynasty and is going to open new and modern country for our Korean race. In the middle of painful and dismal historical background of Korea, modern intellectuals had shouted the power and passion of boys and girls had to be used for Korean race and our homeland. Furthermore, they preached Chungsonyon’s desire has to be suppressed, under controlled and uniformized for reconstructing our country as well. Until now this model of Chungsonyon has survived and breathed under the Korean society through intense education. From modern boys and girls, my father and mother, me to today’s teenagers have lived and survived with these tremendous responsibilities. Incheon was coerced to open the port to trade at 1884 by imperialist countries. After that this place has had full of modern desire and traumatic trace of Korea history. So I face the teenagers with this city from the past to the present to seek real meaning of Chungsonyon and problems and questions of Korea. In the end, this collection of images will show desire, anxiety and fear of Korean society that was fossilized by national traumas and how we had lived and live under this convention as human. 1st Chapter _ Teenagers of today in Incheon / 2nd Chapter _&nbsp; Images from my father’s teenage&nbsp; album. He had lived in Incheon and passed away 15&nbsp; years ago&nbsp; / 3rd Chapter&nbsp; _&nbsp; Images from my teenage&nbsp; album at 1996. ︎ 해(海)에게서 소년(少年)에게&nbsp; 최남선의 최초의 신시(근대시)인 ‘해에게서 소년에게’는 근대 계명기 청소년에 대한 우리의 표상을 잘 보여준다. 이 시에서는 국가의 미래를 짊어질 인물, 전근대의 조선을 넘어서(단절하고) 민족을 근대국가 즉 새로운 세계를 열어줄 인물이 바로 소년, 소녀 (청소년)이라 외친다. 굴곡 있는 역사의 현장에서 근대 초기의 지식인들은 소년, 소녀들의 힘과 열정을 민족과 국가를 재건하기 위해 쓰여야 하며 이를 위해 십대의 욕망은 억제하고 통제, 균일화 되어야 한고 주장하였다. 부모 또는 국가의 수직적 욕망의 의해 통제 되는 소년, 소녀의 모습은 현재도 유효하다. 현재의 십대의 모습에서부터 돌아가신 아버지의 청소년 시절의 앨범 그리고 나의 청소년 시절 사진에서 까지 같은 행동, 표정을 한 동일한 표상을 발견한다. 부지 불식간에 대물림 되어 고착되어 버린, 이내 지나면 기억에서 latter days of Chosun dynasty did not just bring wondrous new culture and technologies when they demanded Chosun to open its door to outside world. They thrust the perspective of an anthropologist or a quasi-scientist, a view of modern era, before the people of Chosun. Discourteous foreign powers measured and evaluated people of Chosun by their own standards and defined them as lazy, primitive, passive and effeminate. This was to claim superiority by defining others to be inferior and feeble and justify barbaric behaviors of aggression. The views of imperialistic invaders still lurk and unexpectedly appear all quarters of Korean society. All the manifoldly misunderstood and twisted pictures and images are easily found in our forklore and tradition. What are they? What is a tradition?
