Contested Memory

I had met victims of a series of state terrors from slaughter of civilians in Gangwado, bombing on civilians by U. S. army and burying them at the Sea near Wolmido and heard heartbreaking memories of those fearful incidents in 2013.

Testimonies of down trodden victims by painful memories are feud with or in worse case, are not even mentioned in the history of state-designated textbooks and state-made history records. We witnessed the same situations repeatedly that unjust power had distorted, omitted or edited historical facts that were not compatible with national interest during the Japanese colonial era, the reign of dictatorship which used anti-communism propaganda and the politics of 386 Generation (an abbreviation for 'those born in the 1960's, went to school in the 1980's and were very politically active in their 30's). 70 years have passed since the Korean War but the aftermath was being piled by layer by layer and we still have some unhealed wounds of past. They are in the end turned into festered traumas making a monster. And the monster is rampaging around our society. How national history is written? How state terrors are activated? How can we remember the terrors by state and tend and heal the wounds of victims and return to run-of-the-mill but peaceful life? We easily lost our ways in the face of irreversible time and weight of each one’s life that cannot face again. 

기억투쟁 _ 권력의 역사

2013년 강화민간인학살사건, 금정굴민간인학살사건, 월미도미군민간인폭격사건, 월미도민간인수장사건 등 내가 사는 도시 인천의 국가폭력 피해자들을 만나 가슴 아픈 기억을 들을 수 있었다.

고통 속에서 살아온 피해자들의 증언은 국가의 역사 기록물과 국정교과서에서 배운 역사와 충돌하거나 아예 존재하지 않는다. 일제강점기, 반공 이데올로기를 앞세운 독재, 586세대의 정치까지. 권력은 국가와 집단의 이익에 부합하지 않는 역사적 사실을 편집, 왜곡, 생략해왔다. 한국전쟁이 끝이 난 지 70여년이 지났지만 여전히 밝혀지지 않은 과거사의 상처와 후유증은 지층처럼 쌓여 곪고 곪아 거대한 트라우마를 남기고 한국 사회 곳곳에서 괴물이 되어 출현한다. 국가의 역사는 무엇인가? 또 어떻게 기록되는가? 국가의 폭력은 어떻게 작동하고 우리는 어떻게 국가폭력을 기억하고 피해자의 상처를 포용하며 어떻게 다시 일상으로 돌아 오게 할 수 있을까? 이미 지나가 버린 시간과 사라져 버린 각각의 삶을 다사 소환하는 것은 불가능하다. 개인의 고통과 아픔은 어떻게 치유는 가능한 것일까? 과연 우리는 이를 위해 무엇을 할 수 있을까?
